How to buy lingerie for your partner
Filed under Buy LingerieFeb 5For most men, buying gifts for a special lady can be a nerve-racking experience at the best of times, as even a simple box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers can turn into a minefield of decisions to make and mistakes to avoid. However, no gift is as fraught with trepidation as lingerie. Once you have navigated the huge choice available and figured out how much to spend, there are still countless other considerations to think through, and all of them utterly individual to your partner. Fear not though, here is a quick checklist of how to buy a woman lingerie.
The obvious start is to think about what your wife or girlfriend actually likes. Depending on how risqué the garment is, you may just want to consider whether or not it will offend her. Do your research though and check out what she normally wears, but don’t get caught rifling through her underwear drawer whatever happens. For many women the idea of dressing up in bed is cringe worthy, whereas others love it, so consider whether to go for something a little saucy, or something that will flatter your partner’s shape and make her feel sexy.
Equally important though is the size. For some reason women’s underwear doesn’t come in the obligatory S, M and L that men’s tends to, so you really, really need to double check her sizes before you buy anything. Do not guess on the day, and certainly do not estimate with hand gestures to the helpful shop assistant. If it’s a new relationship, getting this wrong is annoying but forgivable, but if it’s a long-term partner, getting her size wrong is not an option. Remember: too small and it’ll make her feel fat, too big and it will definitely make her feel fat.
Next, know your market. The term ‘lingerie’ covers a multitude of sins, so don’t let the panic set in on the day and impulse buy something that she would never wear. Research online what’s available, as there are many ‘compromises’ to be made, like a flattering sheer baby doll camisole or French knickers. If you’re feeling pretty flush though, there are one or two big brand lingerie designers that make high quality lingerie that no woman can fail to be impressed by. Better still, you can carry out the whole experience online.
Even though your partner will be unlikely to wearing much else when, or if, she puts her new lingerie on, always make sure it’s her colour. Most women know what colours suit them instinctively, so a quick look through her wardrobe will tell you what to aim for, and you’ll probably know if your girlfriend is the sort to enjoy wearing hot pink PVC pants or not.
If you do go into a lingerie shop or department store, though, always make the most of the assistance available. Staff will have heard every question under the sun before about buying lingerie sets and these days there is absolutely nothing embarrassing about buying your loved one something that will make her feel good. Though, of course, always check the shop’s returns policy, just in case.
